IMG_20160827_153307I recently found myself working on a an art journal page and had come across a recommendation for using a neutral pitt pencil to draw over acrylic ink. Living in NZ its an expensive exercise trying to buy all the brands recommended and time consuming sourcing them. So because I wanted to get my image finished in a hurry I paid a visit to my local dollar store and picked up several pens I thought I would try and was pleasantly surprised when they gave the same effect as the expensive pitt pencils and they cost me a fraction of the price.

The pen I ended up using to draw on the acrylic ink is a this and that pen in white with a medium gel tip. It doesn’t appear that this is a well known brand but that doesn’t matter because it worked for what I was working on. So dont ever feel that you need to use expensive brands because others are. Some pens will work better than others but with some experimentation cost need not be a barrier to your art.

The second pen I want to tell you about is also another pen from the local dollar store this again seems to be an unknown brand called Durmaz and I got these pens in a pack with gold and silver. ¬†They have a tip much like a sharpie pen. So what I did with these pens in my experimentation was try them on an art journal page where I was making a space scene and as you can imagine with a space scene the background is a darker color. So as apart of my journal page I wanted to add words but being im not confident with my own handwriting I stamped straight onto the background and the ink wasnt light enough to stand out now I could have embossed the ink or used a lighter ink pad but again due to cost I didn’t have those items at my fingertips, So I decided to use my silver durmaz pen and write over the stamp and as a result was not only able to keep the font the same as the stamp but I made it sparkle with my doller store silver pen.

So please if your just starting out and you have a small budget please check out your dollar store for cheaper brands.
